Super Bowl Sunday reminds me of a couple of thoughts I have about myself and my profession. I think that coaches tend to gain weight because of a couple of things including myself because I worry so much and spend my free time on my athletes more than myself or even my family when I had one. Its hard for me to find time plus practice it used to awesome when I was teaching weightlifting and not in the classroom like I'm in now. I am starting to cut on down portion size I have to do everything gradually otherwise it does not stick. During basketball season I could be gone every night of the week either coaching, scouting, playing and weightlifting.
I must admit you have to be a special lady or guy to be married to a coach. There is a a lot of sacrifice going on in that house no matter what it takes some extra attention if you are a coach.

A Full Gamut of Basketball Today
Today was a full day of basketball for the old ball coach. It started off playing referee for thee games in the morning for 4th -6th grade boys and girls. It was the arch rival games the towns are separated by six miles. The 4th grade boys won with a last second shot the 5th grade boys won because the coach was arguing or trying to argue with me in the last minute because I missed a travel. The last game of the day brought the only girls game of the day and the visiting team made it a complete sweep because the coach worries more about them running the plays correctly rather than fundamentals. I THINK IT IT SHOULD BE A RULE THAT ALL BIDDY COACHES TAKE A COACHES CLASS!!!!!!!
Tonight is the border war between KU and MU #4 vs #8 it should be a classic game going to watch it in Missouri with a MU fan. I know I'm going to be one of the few KU fans but really don't care because I have faith that KU will win handle anything that MU throws at them.
The styles are different just like the coaches so it's going to be a PT'er BABY!!!!!!!!!!!

RELATIONSHIPS
As a coach and a teacher you meet a lot of people whether its in a classroom or a gym or on a field. I have coached for 16 years and have formed some of the greatest bonds that ended up being friends after graduation. When I get a wedding invitation or a birth announcement in the mail it makes me smile and I think I have done my job. I have a personality that allows me to do same thing with a student but it seems so much stronger from an athlete. When an athlete is with you for four years you tend to get to know that person and know their personality and the bond is something to be proud of as a coach.
If that bomd exist then you did your job as a coach, there is respect, they like you and believed in the program or bought what you were selling as a coach. As a coach you tend to hangout with people that are similiar. What does that mean? Well my best friends are coaches so relationships are something a coach has to be able to do is form a relationship with their players.

A Sad Day in Basketball
The State of Kansas lost a son, while the game of Basketball lost a good man. May Charlie Spoonhour rest in peace and be remembered as an individual who cared for his athletes, and a person who worked hard. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and a special thought goes out to his son Jay who is a fine coach and a Pitt State Alum.
I remember coach Spoon from the Nike Coaching clinics he was a man who would put a smile on everyone's face because of the way he told his stories. A very good storyteller and a coach who had jokes and could ease the crowd.
As a high school coach you look up to the guys that are college coaches and wonder to yourself how did they get there? Some fell into it and won others worked their way up the ladder. Coach Spoon worked his way up the ladder because of his hard work and his dedication to the programs he served. He started out as an high school coach and worked his way up. That is tough to do now days but I admire somebody like that because I want to do that.
